The Capsat Messenger (see specifications) is an Inmarsat M4 terminal that is no longer manufactured. A limited number of used units and rental Inmarsat M4 terminals are available from Outfitter Satellite (limited availability). Inmarsat BGAN services are intended to replace Inmarsat M4 service, but Inmarsat M4 will remain the only land portable Inmarsat high speed service available in the Pacific Ocean Region (POR) until probably sometime in 2009. The Capsat Messenger is cased in a rugged magnesium housing. The Capsat Messenger was made with several different antenna versions: the Big Dish land portable antenna, the Tri-Fold land portable antenna, the Small Dish land portable antenna (pictured right), and the vehicular tracking antenna. The Small Dish and Big Dish versions are designed for high durability and may be used in permanent roof or wall mounted applications. The Tri-Fold version was the lightest and most portable version. Inmarsat M4 terminals (also called Global Area Network or GAN) allow the user to bring an ISDN environment anywhere in the world. The Capsat Messenger includes a built-in handset, two RJ-11 ports, a USB port, and an external SIM card port. It supports 4.8 kbps voice and the following high speed service types: 64 kbps ISDN data, 56 kbps ISDN data, 64 kbps Speech, and 3.1 KHz audio. All of these services are billed by connection time. Some later versions of the Capsat Messenger supported Mobile Packet Data Service (MPDS), which was a packet data service with out a guaranteed data rate that is billed by the megabyte of data transferred instead of connection time.
