#1 Food and Water

Bringing food and water on a bikepacking trip may seem like a no-brainer, but with the limited space that a bike allots, you must choose wisely. The food you bring should be non-perishable for the most part. You’ll also want to ensure that you have cooking supplies such as a pot or pan to prepare your food.

For the water, you will want to bring some fresh water along with you as well as reusable water bottles and a water purifier. Water is heavy and can take up quite a bit of space on your bike, and a purifier may be ideal so that you can collect drinking water as you need it. Just ensure that there are plenty of water sources along your path.

#2 Shelter and Sleeping System

Bikepacking means that you’ll be spending at least one night under the stars. You want to make sure that you have what you need to sleep soundly and safely. A sleeping bag and a tent that pack up tight and small so that they fit on your bike are an excellent choice. A good night's sleep can make all the difference when it comes to the enjoyment of your next day of biking.

#3 First Aid Kit

Being out in nature comes with its own risks. It’s incredibly easy to knick, scratch, or cut yourself while riding, making camp, or collecting firewood. You should have a first aid kit to address these small injuries as well as larger ones. For instance, spraining your ankle can really put a damper on your bikepacking trip, but unfortunately it happens. Having an ice pack, compression wrap, and some ibuprofen handy may make your next stretch of biking much easier to get through.

#4 Clothing

You’ve undoubtedly done your research into what type of weather is expected during your bikepacking adventure. You’ll want to ensure that you have packed clothing that will protect you from the cold, heat, sun, snow, or whatever other weather that is predicted in the area you’ll be traversing. Keep in mind that weather predictions are not always perfectly accurate, so you may want to pack a few extra things just in case. As well as making sure that you have enough clothing that you’ll have something clean and dry to wear everyday.

#5 Satellite Phone

One last essential supply that we’ll discuss is a satellite phone. While you’re bikepacking, you’re likely to be going out of reach of normal cell phone service. Getting lost in nature is one of the best parts of bikepacking after all. But “getting lost” should ideally be more of a mental state than an actuality. While removing yourself from the hustle and bustle of everyday life can be beneficial for both your mental and physical well-being, it’s essential that you do so in a safe manner. That’s where a satellite phone comes in. While you’re out in nature, you should always make sure that you have a way to contact a friend, family member, or emergency services if it becomes necessary.
