Is a US Number Helpful?
Most satellite phones are kept off until a call is made in order to save battery strength. So, a US number has no benefit because incoming calls route to voice mail and additional airtime costs must be incurred to retrieve the message. Fortunately, there is a better way than using voice mail! Instead, tell your friends to send a free text message to your satellite phone. Here are instructions. If your satellite phone is kept in a docking station ready to receive a call, an optional US number is a great idea. Let us know if you are interested.
Service Plans & Airtime:
* The IsatPhone 2 satellite phone offers 2400 bps circuit-switched data (best case), and is suitable for light email applications but not web browsing.
** Mountainous terrain and other vertical obstructions such as tall trees or buildings can block the Inmarsat satellite signal. We do not recommend the IsatPhone 2, even within its formal coverage area, as shown above, for mountainous areas where terrain masking can easily occur. As a rule of thumb, the Inmarsat satellite is relatively low on the horizon north of 50° N latitude or south of 50° S latitude, which increases the chances of terrain masking problems.
Satellite phones with an outside antenna that are ready to receive calls can benefit from a US Number. However, most Inmarsat GSPS satellite phone are kept powered off until a call is made in order to save battery strength. So, in this case, the US number has no benefit because the incoming calls simply route to voice mail. Then, the satellite phone user must incur additional airtime costs to retrieve the voice mail message. Fortunately, there is a better way! Tell your friends to send a free text message to your IsatPhone 2. Here are instructions.
