Inmarsat GSPS: Our most popular Inmarsat product is the Inmarsat IsatPhone 2 satellite phone which provides voice, SMS, email-to-text and 2.4 kbps internet access. Though the IsatPhone 2 equipment and service cost typically is lower than comparable Iridium equipment, we recommend the IsatPhone 2 primarily for users operating in non-mountainous areas between 50° N and 50° S. Key safety features include an Assistance Button and its ability to send a breadcrumb trail of GPS locations by text or email to keep friends and family aware of your location. In a critical situation, the Assistance Button can be configured to send multiple recipients a message with your current GPS fix, the time at which this fix was acquired and the time that the alert was triggered.
Inmarsat BGAN: Inmarsat also offers lightweight land-portable satellite internet terminals about the size of a laptop computer. Inmarsat BGAN terminals offer voice, standard IP internet access, and streaming IP. The data speed available depends on the class of Inmarsat BGAN terminal. For example, Class 1 BGAN terminals like the Cobham EXPLORER 710 offer standard IP data up to 492 kbps and streaming IP data speeds suitable for HDR broadcast video. Standard IP data is offered on a best effort shared bandwidth basis; this means that the maximum standard IP data speed is not what one should expect typically.
