Thuraya airtime is used in their range of satellite phones to cater for voice, text, and always-on internet access as fast as 60 kbps down / 15 kbps up with regional coverage in much of Europe, northern and central Africa, the Middle East, central and southeastern Asia, India, Japan and Australia. Thuraya IP internet terminals provide data rates up to 444 kbps.

In terms of Thuraya's coverage area, even in primary coverage regions, service can be blocked by nearby terrain features such as mountains, and you must have a direct line of sight between yourself and the Thuraya satellite to be able to make calls. If you are using a GSM-cellular capable Thuraya phone model such as the Thuraya XT DUAL, you should have additional GSM cellular coverage in many countries which is provided by local GSM operators.
