FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for setup, subscriptions, messaging, tracking, and SOS.

Do I need an active subscription to use inReach?

Yes. Two-way messaging, tracking, and SOS features require an active satellite subscription.

Can I type messages on my phone instead of the device?

Yes. Pair with the Garmin Messenger app to use your phone keyboard while the inReach device handles the satellite link when needed.

What is the difference between Mini 2 and the Mini 3 series?

Mini 2 is a proven, button-driven device. The Mini 3 series modernises the experience with a refreshed interface while keeping the core inReach capabilities: messaging, tracking, and SOS.

How does SOS work?

When SOS is triggered, your location is sent via satellite and an interactive message thread opens so responders can gather details and coordinate assistance. Keep the device on and with a clear view of the sky.

Do preset messages count toward my allowance?

Many plans allow preset check-in style messages that do not count toward your monthly message allowance. Exact behaviour depends on the subscription tier.

Is the inReach Mini range waterproof?

Mini 2 is rated IPX7. Mini 3 series models are typically rated to a similar outdoor-ready standard. For best longevity, rinse and dry after saltwater exposure.

Which plan should I choose?

Think about two things: how many messages you will send, and how often you want tracking points. Light usage can suit a smaller plan, frequent tracking and regular messaging usually benefits from a larger allowance.
