The Inmarsat IsatPhone 2 is an especially good choice for the Caribbean and we recommend it for latitudes between 50°N and 50°S. It supports voice and SMS messaging. Receiving an SMS message is free and there is a small per SMS charge for sending SMS message from the IsatPhone 2. Email-to-text conversion is automatic and allows anyone to email a message up to 160 characters in length to the IsatPhone 2. The IsatPhone 2 can also send an SMS message directly to a cell phone's text address or to any email address using email-to-text conversion. The IsatPhone 2 has an emergency assistance feature that transmits a pre-configured emergency message with your GPS position while simultaneously initiating a voice call.
Coverage Limitations: Mountainous terrain and other vertical obstructions such as tall trees or buildings may block the Inmarsat satellite signal. As a rule of thumb, the Inmarsat satellite is usually accessible between 50º N latitude and 50º S latitude, though terrain masking can still occur. Even within the formal Inmarsat coverage area (shown here), we do not recommend the IsatPhone 2 for applications in extremely mountainous areas. Instead, we recommend the Iridium 9555 satellite phone.
