A hardwired unit may be better for a vehicle, vessel, or fixed asset that needs frequent reporting over long periods. Portable devices are easier to move between assets, while installed devices reduce the chance that someone forgets to pack, charge, or activate the tracker.
Reporting interval is one of the most important decisions. A device reporting every few minutes gives managers more timely route visibility, but it uses more battery power and can require a higher airtime allowance. For an unattended asset, one or several position reports per day may be enough. For a moving vehicle on a remote route, shorter intervals may be justified.
Before selecting a device and plan, define these operating requirements:

Tracking Equipment Is Also a Safety Process
Location monitoring can support safety, but it should not be treated as an emergency response program by itself. A tracker may show that a vehicle has stopped or left a defined area, yet it cannot explain whether the driver is taking a planned break, dealing with a mechanical problem, or facing an emergency.
For personnel working alone or in high-risk areas, pair asset visibility with a communication and escalation plan. That may include a satellite communicator with two-way messaging, an SOS function, scheduled check-ins, or a satellite phone for detailed coordination. A personal locator beacon also has a role for emergency rescue, but it is not designed to provide routine asset management or ongoing team messaging.
The operating procedure matters as much as the device. Decide who receives alerts, how long they have to respond, how they verify a missed report, and when they contact local support or emergency services. A geofence alert sent to an unattended email inbox does not protect an asset. A clear response owner does.
Build an Asset Tracking Deployment That People Will Use
Many tracking programs fail for ordinary reasons: batteries are not charged, devices are moved without updating assignments, plans are not activated before departure, or no one checks the monitoring portal. A simple deployment process prevents most of these gaps.
Start by assigning each tracker a clear asset name, serial number, owner, and contact record. Use a naming structure that makes sense under pressure, such as vehicle number, project code, or equipment type. Avoid vague labels like “Tracker 3,” especially when multiple crews are working in different regions.
Test the device in an open-sky location before it goes into service. Confirm that positions reach the monitoring platform, alerts go to the correct contacts, and the device is configured for the intended reporting interval. Then test it in its actual mounting position. This is where placement problems appear.
Battery management deserves the same discipline as fuel and maintenance. Set a charging or replacement schedule based on the selected reporting rate, expected temperatures, and device specifications. Cold conditions can reduce battery performance, and frequent tracking reports consume more power than occasional check-ins. For installed equipment, inspect cables, mounts, antennas, and weather seals as part of regular service.
Purchase, Rental, and Airtime Planning
The right ownership model follows the work schedule. Buying makes sense for organizations with recurring remote operations or assets that need year-round monitoring. Renting can be practical for a seasonal project, a one-time expedition, temporary disaster response, or a short-term field deployment where purchasing equipment would add unnecessary cost.
Airtime planning should match the tracking behavior you need. Low-frequency reporting may be sufficient for stored equipment, while moving assets often need a plan that supports more frequent updates. Review whether your program needs basic position reports only or additional features such as messaging, emergency functions, location sharing, and detailed monitoring access.
Do not choose a plan based only on the lowest monthly price. An inexpensive plan can become a poor fit if it limits reporting too heavily, creates overage costs during active work, or cannot support the alerting workflow your team relies on. At the same time, paying for minute-by-minute updates on a stationary pump trailer may not improve your operation. The goal is useful visibility at a predictable operating cost.
Questions to Ask Before You Deploy
A dependable tracking program starts with practical answers. What assets create the greatest operational disruption if they are lost, delayed, or moved unexpectedly? Where do those assets spend time outside cellular coverage? How quickly would the team need to know about a route deviation, unauthorized movement, or missed check-in?
Also consider the people behind the process. A field technician needs a device that is simple to charge and operate. A program manager needs clear reporting, assignment records, and alerts that do not create noise. Procurement teams need compatible hardware, coverage guidance, and an airtime structure that can scale with the operation.
