1b. What does Short Messaging (SMS) Cost? Your IsatPhone 2 or IsatPhone PRO lets you send and receive SMS messages. Inbound email-to-text or web message-to-text messages are FREE while outbound SMS messages are charged according to the rates shown in your Service Agreement.
An outbound SMS message may be undelivered because of problems on the receiving side of the communication such as mail filters or mail-box-full errors or incorrectly typed addresses. For this reason, outbound messages are billed per recipient whether or not they are deliverable.
Each individual outbound message has a maximum size of 160 Latin characters (or about 74 non-Latin characters). Up to 10 outbound messages can be concatenated to form a 1600-character "long" message which would be billed separately as a series of 160-character maximum regular SMS messages.
2b. Can I send a Text Message to Another Satellite Phone or Cell Phone?Yes, you can send a text message to other mobile phones including most cellular phones, another Isatphone PRO, Iridium, Inmarsat BGAN, or Thuraya. To do this, use the "Left Selection" key to enter the "Menu". Select the "Envelope" icon. Then, select the "New Message" option. Select the "Text" option. Enter the mobile number to which you wish to send the SMS message. For example, to send an SMS to a U.S. cellular phone with mobile number (615)123-4567, you would enter the following number: 00 + Country code + Area code and Mobile Number : 0016151234567. After you have entered your message, use the Left Selection Key. Highlight and select Send. The phone should indicate that the message is sent. Message delivery normally takes several minutes. (Hint: if you need special characters like @ or & press the * key on the LCD screen which will review the extended character menu.)
3b. How do you access email or the internet?Inmarsat GSPS phones, such as the IsatPhone PRO, do offer internet access up to 2400 bps. Outfitter Satellite's experience is that though an IsatPhone PRO can maintain a data session for a long time with good reliability, that the effective data rate that you should expect is probably 1800 bps or less. For this reason, Outfitter Satellite usually recommends that users needing data select a different type of satellite phone. For example, Iridium handheld satellite phones typically achieve 2400 to 2800 bps, and Inmarsat BGAN and FleetBroadband terminals offer true broadband data rates. Specialized email software packages exist that can be used with the IsatPhone PRO in light email applications. If you need 160 characters or less, the IsatPhone PRO has an email-to-text capability that allows it to receive emails at email@example.com (where 870xxxxxxxxx is the IsatPhone PRO mobile number). You can also send 160 character text messages to any email address directly from the IsatPhone PRO without the need for a computer.
4b. How do I send a GPS-enabled personal alert to my friends? The IsatPhone PRO has a "personal alert feature" that enables a user to send their GPS position, along with a short pre-configured message, as an email or text message, to a maximum of 10 recipients. A short-dial code lets you send the personal alert quickly in case of an emergency. Generally, email message routing is more reliable than using text messages, but either can be used. The personal alert is made up of the following elements:
To set up and activate a personal alert, select Extras > Personal alert > Edit personal alert. Then, select "Configure personal alert", and edit the recipients and the message. You can restrict access so that users without the phone's admin code cannot modify the personal alert message configuration. To do so please refer to the manual.
5b. How do I send an email or text message to the IsatPhone 2 or IsatPhone PRO?The easiest method of sending an SMS to the IsatPhone is by using the Inmarsat email-to-text service Simply send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org (where 870xxxxxxxxx is your IsatPhone PRO mobile number). You can also use the Inmarsat SMS Portal by clicking here. You can send a text directly from your cell phone to the IsatPhone -- if your cellular carrier is configured to communicate to the Inmarsat SMS gateway. We have found that very often this requires working with the cellular carrier to get the configuration completed. So, we recommend either the email-to-text service or the web portal.
7b. How do I make calls from my IsatPhone to a landline or cellphone and is there a free test number? From the IsatPhone, you will dial 00 and the country code and number. For example, the phone number of Outfitter Satellite in the US is 615-889-8833. The country code of the US and Canada is 1. So to call Outfitter Satellite from the IsatPhone, you would dial 0016158898833. To make a free test call from your IsatPhone, dial +870 776 999 999. After the call goes through, you will hear a recorded message confirming the call has been made successfully. You can then hang up.
8b. How do I make calls to my IsatPhone from a landline? You will be making an international call to the 870 country code. From a US landline, you would dial 011870xxxxxxxxx, where 870xxxxxxxxx is the mobile number of the Isatphone. The call will be billed to the party making the call by their own long distance carrier. Be warned that very high per minute costs, often exceeding $10 per minute are common. An alternative way to communicate to the IsatPhone would be to send an SMS message to the IsatPhone. There is no charge to receive SMS messages on the IsatPhone.
9b.. I am having problems getting a GPS fix before making calls?Getting a valid GPS fix enables the Inmarsat network to optimize the performance of its network. The information is not stored and will not be available on your call detail records. If you have been operating the IsatPhone PRO handset in the same general location for a few days, you will probably not be aware of the need for a GPS fix. However, if you change location drastically, a new GPS fix may take several minutes. A message will be displayed on the handset if a new GPS fix is needed. You cannot make calls until a GPS fix has occurred. Here is a short list of trouble shooting tips:
10b. Are there any countries that block GSPS service?Due to the continuously changing regulations that exist in various countries, Outfitter Satellite cannot give legal advice about whether a particular satellite or cellular phone is legal and approved for the region or country within which the end-user intends to operate. Some countries, like Russia, may want you to register your satellite phone if you are making a short visit using the satellite phone.
11b. Can Outfitter Satellite notify me of excessive usage on my IsatPhone PRO?Though the only sure approach to budget control is to use a prepaid SIM card, it is possible to use a monitoring system on most postpaid plans. The monitoring system would be setup for an approximate amount of usage, e.g. $1000 for a given calendar month. If the usage limit for the month is exceeded, an email notification will be sent. The customer is advised that the monitoring system has various limitations and can fail to notify you of excessive usage in some circumstances. Consequently, Outfitter Satellite does not guarantee that the monitoring system will function as expected.
1. How do I perform a firmware upgrade on an IsatPhone 2?Detailed instructions on how to perform the firmware upgrade on your IsatPhone 2 can be found by clicking here. Outfitter Satellite can also do firmware upgrades for you, but you will have to pay a small labor fee and shipping to and from our location. Before sending your equipment back to us for the firmware upgrade, please fill in our online RMA form.
2. What accessories are available for the IsatPhone 2?Common accessories include the Optimizer HotSpot for email and photo-sharing applications, a watertight Pelican case, and a back-pack solar panel for recharging your IsatPhone 2 in the field. There is a line of docking stations for vehicular and in-building use. Some of the docking stations support an RJ-11 telephone connection for PABX integrations. The docking stations can be used with a variety of antennas, including a fixed passive antenna, a low-profile vehicular antenna, and a marine pole-mount mast antenna. Antenna cables from 6 to 50 meters are available. If you do not want to use a docking station, an external car antenna is available but the antenna cable is limited to 1.5 meter length.
4. How do I get the prepaid balance of my IsatPhone 2?If the IsatPhone 2 has a prepaid SIM card, you can get the prepaid balance (for no charge) by entering your balance enquiry code, *106# and pressing the green key . Your current balance and expiry date will be shown on the screen.
5. My IsatPhone 2 keeps on turning off and then back on again. What do I do?If this is happening, there are a number of possible reasons. The IsatPhone 2 has extreme weather resistance features including an O-ring around the battery contacts. Sometimes the O-ring makes it hard to get the battery to seat against the electrical contacts. So, try removing the battery. Make sure it is clean. Then put it back into the phone and make sure to push down firmly. It is possible you may need to update your firmware. If that does not work, you probably need to return your IsatPhone 2 to Outfitter Satellite. Before sending your equipment back to us, please call our Customer Service team for additional assistance and then fill in our online RMA form.
3a. What Accessories are Available? The standard kit includes the IsatPhone PRO Handset plus the following:
7a. I need to track the current position of the phone. Is that possible? You can have the user of the phone send you his GPS position as a text message or email (see page 29 of the User Manual). There is even a feature that allows the user to dial a short code and automatically transmit a brief message including his GPS position to as many as 10 recipients (see below). Outfitter Satellite sometimes receives calls from people saying that the user is disabled or sick and they need to locate the position of the satellite phone to find that user. This request cannot be fulfilled by Outfitter Satellite. However, we will assist the customer of record on the account in making a formal request to Inmarsat if you are working with a government agency such as an Emergency Rescue organization that is looking for the missing person with the satellite phone.
8a. How do I check my Isatphone PRO Prepaid balance? From the main screen enter your balance enquiry code, *106# and press the green key . Your current balance and expiry date will be shown on the screen.
9a. How Long do the Batteries Last? The IsatPhone PRO has an excellent (Li-Ion type 3.7 Volt, 9.7 Watt-Hours, weight 60 grams) battery that according to Inmarsat offers up to 8 hours of talk time or 100 hours of standby (at room temperature). To achieve maximum battery performance you can eliminate unnecessary power usage. For example, deactivate the screen and keypad lights and deactivate Bluetooth if you are not using it. The IsatPhone PRO battery can be charged on AC "wall" power or 10-30 Volt DC "car" power using the accessories provided with the standard kit. At room temperature, the AC "wall" charger will bring the IsatPhone PRO battery from no charge to 90% charge in about 2 hours and achieve full charge in about 3 hours. Outfitter Satellite has several solar panel solutions.
10a. What is the best solar panel to use with the IsatPhone PRO?If light weight is the main concern, we recommend the 4W Solar Charging System. It has a built-in battery pack and integrated solar panel that can be mounted on your back pack or tent. The battery pack stores power that can be released through a USB output port when needed.
11a. What is the best method for long term storage of the IsatPhone PRO?Some of our customers have experienced battery problems caused by long term storage of satellite phones inside the cabin of a locked up vehicle such as a boat. Continuous exposure of the IsatPhone PRO to extreme temperatures can shorten the life of the satellite phone and damage the battery, as stated in the user manual. The maximum operating temperature of the phone is 131° F. The maximum storage temperature of the phone is 158° F. The temperatures inside the cabin of a locked vehicle such as a boat in the summer regularly reach 110° F and can occasionally exceed 130° F.
The other thing that is hard on Li-Ion batteries is storing them completely flat (zero charge). Our recommendation for long term storage of a Li-Ion battery is to remove it from the phone, give it a 50% charge level, and store it in a cool dry place. Room temperature is acceptable, but if a refrigerator is available, the phone and battery can be placed in a zip lock bag with desiccant inside the bag to prevent condensation. If you use a refrigerator, make sure that the phone is given adequate time to thermalize (return to room temperature) when it is eventually removed from the refrigerator before it is turned on again. If you put a cold phone in humid air, there is a danger of condensation forming on the internal boards. It is important that no water condensation is present before powering the phone on. Usually waiting 3-4 hours after removal from the refrigerator is sufficient.
12a. My IsatPhone PRO does not make calls while docked in my BEAM IsatDock. If the IsatPhone PRO does not have any Inmarsat signal and the antenna is connected properly, the most common problem is that the IsatPhone PRO's weather flap is improperly positioned. The video below shows the correct process. Occasionally, the issue may require updating the firmware on the IsatDock and the IsatPhone PRO.
