Verify SOS features without creating a false alarm
Some satellite phones include an SOS button or can be paired with a monitoring service. Confirm how the emergency feature works before the field user needs it. Determine whether SOS is routed through the network, a third-party emergency coordination center, or your organization’s own response process.
Do not press a live SOS button as a routine test unless the service provider specifically gives you a test procedure or test mode. An accidental activation can trigger a real emergency response, create unnecessary cost, and divert resources from an actual incident.
Instead, review the steps with the user. Identify the SOS button, explain how long it must be pressed, verify any registration requirements, and confirm the emergency contacts and location information associated with the device. If the handset has GPS, allow it to obtain a location outdoors and verify that coordinates appear correctly.
Check the battery, charger, and field-ready accessories
A successful call with a fully charged phone is only the first power check. Inspect the battery for swelling, cracked housing, corrosion, or loose fit. Charge the handset with the intended wall charger, vehicle adapter, solar setup, or docking station. If the mission depends on vehicle power, test that exact cable and power source before leaving.
